How We Grow Intentionally
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” — Proverbs 27:17
Traveler,
There is a question I come back to often.
Not every month.
Not every year.
Almost every day.
Am I becoming better?
Not richer.
Not busier.
Not more successful by the world’s standards.
Just…
Better.
A better husband.
A better father.
A better friend.
A better leader.
A better man than I was yesterday.
Because the truth is this:
Life doesn’t reward our intentions.
It rewards our actions.
We Don’t Drift Toward Greatness
Have you ever noticed that no one accidentally gets into great shape?
No one accidentally builds a strong marriage.
No one accidentally becomes a trusted leader.
And no one accidentally leaves a legacy worth remembering.
Yet we often expect our character to grow without putting any intentional effort into it.
James Clear writes in Atomic Habits:
“Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”
That sentence hit me the first time I read it.
Because it shifted my focus away from goals…
…and toward identity.
Every decision I make is casting a vote.
Every workout.
Every conversation.
Every promise I keep.
Every time I choose patience over anger.
Every moment I put my phone down to be present with my family.
Every one of those moments says something about who I am becoming.
The question isn’t whether we’re changing.
We all are.
The question is whether we’re changing on purpose.
The Standard Isn’t Perfection
One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is this:
“I’ll start when everything settles down.”
After this project.
After the kids get older.
After work slows down.
After vacation.
After…
But growth doesn’t happen someday.
It happens today.
One decision.
One conversation.
One habit.
One step.
Perfection has never been the standard.
Progress is.
That is why at Unfinished Quest we don’t chase perfection.
We chase progress.
Because the quest isn’t about arriving.
It’s about continuing.
Better Is Built Quietly
The world celebrates dramatic moments.
Promotions.
Championships.
Big announcements.
Million-dollar deals.
But most meaningful growth happens where nobody is watching.
It’s choosing to wake up thirty minutes earlier.
Reading instead of scrolling.
Listening instead of interrupting.
Taking responsibility instead of making excuses.
Being fully present instead of merely being physically there.
Those moments rarely make headlines.
But they build extraordinary lives.
They build extraordinary men.
The Mirror Is More Important Than the Window
It’s easy to look out the window.
To notice where everyone else is falling short.
What your boss should do differently.
What your spouse could improve.
How your coworkers should change.
Growth begins when we stop looking out the window…
…and start looking into the mirror.
Ask yourself:
Where do I need to grow?
Where have I become comfortable?
What habit is quietly holding me back?
What kind of man do I want my children to remember?
Those questions aren’t comfortable.
Neither is growth.
But comfort has never produced greatness.
Faith Gives Direction
Growth without purpose eventually becomes self-improvement for the sake of self-improvement.
Faith reminds us that becoming better isn’t about becoming more important.
It’s about becoming more useful.
More compassionate.
More courageous.
More generous.
More patient.
Whether your faith is deeply rooted in Scripture or you’re simply seeking a life grounded in meaning and purpose, the invitation is the same: become someone who leaves people better than you found them.
That’s a standard worth living for.
Imagine Ten Years From Now
Picture yourself a decade from today.
Your children are older.
Your career has changed.
Your hair has a little more gray.
People aren’t talking about your job title.
They aren’t discussing your income.
They’re talking about who you became.
Were you dependable?
Were you present?
Did people trust your word?
Did your family know they mattered?
Did your life point toward something bigger than yourself?
Those are the questions that outlive résumés.
The Standard
At Unfinished Quest, “Be Better” isn’t just another slogan.
It’s our standard.
Not because we’re trying to be better than someone else.
Because we’re trying to become who we were created to be.
One choice.
One habit.
One lesson.
One day at a time.
As James Clear reminds us, every action is a vote for the person we’re becoming.
So today…
Cast one vote for courage.
One vote for discipline.
One vote for humility.
One vote for your family.
One vote for your future.
And then wake up tomorrow…
…and cast another.
Because becoming better isn’t something you accomplish once.
It’s something you practice for the rest of your life.
Walking Point
This week, choose one habit you’ve been avoiding.
Don’t overhaul your life.
Don’t create a twenty-step plan.
Simply take the first intentional step.
Because the life you want is rarely built by giant leaps.
It’s built by small decisions, made consistently, over time.
Keep growing.
Keep climbing.
Keep becoming.
The Quest Isn’t Finished. Neither Are You. Earn Your Legacy.
